San Diego Yoga Center offers yoga classes for all levels of yoga students; young and old, novice and experienced, athletic and sedentary. We believe various styles of yoga should be available to everyone at reasonable prices and strive to have a community of instructors, staff and students offering support and caring for one another. It is our belief that yoga is an essential element to healing a broken body and spirit and to maintain a healthy, low-stress style of living.
I took my first Bikram yoga class in April of 2001 at the Old Town studio here in San Diego. I loved it and hated it. I STILL FEEL THE SAME WAY! I continued to practice there and other San Diego schools for the next two years. I was involved in long distance running know as endurance races (Including 100 mile races). Crazy- I know! The yoga helped me in all ways including preventing injuries. I moved to Hawaii to train and race in one of the toughest races in the world because of the high elevation gain and the terrain. Amazingly I managed to take third place a couple of times. I could not have done it without the yoga.
My path took me to the Bikram teacher training in Los Angeles, where I was certified in 2005. I then taught in Hawaii until March 2008 until returning to San Diego and becoming director of this school. While living and teaching in Hawaii, the training site was moved there for two sessions and I regularly attended class. The teacher training brings in a lot of senior teachers and the best teachers from around the world and I did have the good fortune and opportunity to take advantage of that. I have had a lot of excellent teachers. I represented Hawaii in 2007 and 2008, and Southern CA in 2009 in the national championships. I’m a person that never gives up. Sometimes I want to but I don’t. The Bikram yoga will teach you to always think positive and never allow negativity to enter your mind. With this simple principle, how could you possibly fall short of your capabilities and full potential. Whatever you set your mind on it can become reality because you have learned the art of concentration and you harness the power of focusing your mind. THIS IS THE YOGA. If I can do this, you can do this. When I started I was not good but I kept trying time and time again. Every time I went to class I fell completely apart within minutes. I could not comprehend how I could run 100 miles without stopping but couldn’t do 5 minutes of Bikram Yoga without falling apart and practically dying! I got yelled at a lot. My balance was terrible and I was the guy that was hopping all over the room trying to stand still and lock my knee. I was the one that was hyperventilating all the time and crawling to the door to get out and get a breath of fresh air. Somehow I worked past all of that. I knew who was good and I put myself as close to them as possible and watched them and learned to do as they did. I knew it was going to take a lot of work and time. I’m still at it.
My responsibilities are much greater these days. I have to bring you all the knowledge that bikram has given me and all the teachers I have worked with and under. I have to give you a good place to practice this very important thing, this way of life, this yoga. I always strive for the best, and I will help you to achieve the same for yourself. In 2005 I took my first Bikram class here in San Diego. There was an introductory special of 10 days of yoga- I WENT EVERY SINGLE DAY. After taking my first class I was in love with the way I felt inside and out and how challenging class was! I knew that this yoga was something special. For the next 4 years or so I was in and out of the hot room then finally had a more consistent practice after moving to San Diego from NYC in 2009. I earned a degree in Marketing in New York City and fiddled with that for a few years while still incorporating yoga in my life. Then, with the support of family and my yoga community, I completed my teacher training in Los Angeles and was certified in the Fall of 2011. I was so worried if I was doing the right thing or not but after teaching my first class I knew I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing, sharing the gift of yoga with others.
After starting a family in 2014 my teaching took a backseat but I never left it, it's part of who I am. In September 2016 I joined Anthony as co-owner of the studio and I couldn't be more thrilled! I get to do what I love and spend time with my family. Sharing yoga with others makes my heart full. If you're ever second guessing trying out yoga just remember- you have nothing to lose and only more chances to improve your life. Take a leap of faith and see where it brings you.
Nelia has dabbled in pilates, tai chi and yoga practicing at home and with friends using books, videos and private lessons during the many years that she worked full time as a project engineer and contracts manager in California's Silicon valley. During those years her main exercise had been swimming until she discovered Bikram yoga 3 years ago. Immediately her focus shifted to yoga, such that she scheduled her activities to make sure she got at least 4 classes a week, and strived to become very proficient. She found Bikram yoga very challenging and satisfying in terms of rigor, precision and health benefits. After a year of regular practice and enjoying the benefits of being fit, strong and flexible with automatic weight and cholesterol control through Bikram yoga, Nelia and her daughter Amanda started talking about going to Teacher Training as a way of taking the practice to the next level. Nelia (and Amanda too) completed Teacher Training and got certified in the Spring of 2009. Nelia also plans to bring Bikram yoga to the small town of Salmon in Idaho where she and her husband has a second home so she can happily share her practice with her hiking buddies in Salmon.
Nelia has been practicing Yang-style Tai Chi for over 10 years. She trained one-on-one from 2002 to 2007 with Howard Tseng, a certified Tai Chi master in Taiwan and in California (San Francisco Bay Area). She was a teaching assistant to Howard for about a year in 2007 and 2008 before moving to San Diego. Nelia has been teaching Tai Chi in Salmon, Idaho since 2010.
I first heard about hot yoga from a friend and thought, "Really? It's a stretching class-will my heart pound? Will it challenge me?"
I took my first class in September of 2007. I remember lying on my mat after that first class (a bit nauseous and wiped out) and thinking "YES" to my earlier reservations about yoga. It was both challenging and a workout. I woke up the next morning and felt EVERY muscle.
I made myself go back and take class a week later and managed one class a week for almost two years; it was a love/hate relationship. I loved how my body felt but needed the six days in between to mentally and physically prepare myself to go back to class again.
Over the next three years, I finally made my goal to do five classes a week. I am addicted! I love yoga and the many benefits that come with it both physically and mentally.
It was not long after I began a regular practice that I thought about becoming a teacher. I have always had the passion to become a teacher, but with a family at home and a time consuming job, there were just not enough hours in the day to take on more work. Therefore, when my son and daughter left for college, the timing was right to take the next step and begin training. Thank you Anthony!
I took my first Bikram yoga class 10 years ago. It just about killed me. The heat and 90 minute class kicked my butt. I didn't return to take another class for a month.
I bought a 2 week package because it was more cost effective than another walk in fee. From there I started a regular practice and began to experience peace within myself, more mental and emotional strength and clarity.
I have never looked back. It is a part of my life now.
I'm a born and raised San Diego native. I had taken yoga classes from time to time, none of which really kept my interest until I tried my first hot class. I immediately loved everything about it, the heat, the postures, the challenge. As my body started quickly changing, my flexibility improved and I could focus my mind better, I become more and more passionate about developing my practice. It's been 7 years and I still hold the same passion for my practice. Yoga is the savior I never knew I needed and I want to share the blessing of yoga as much as I possibly can during this life..
There is nothing that pushes me to be a better person than hot yoga. I began practicing in October of 2011, excited but very shy and extremely scared of the unknowns of hot yoga. I had only taken one yoga class before, at Grossmont College, but it didn't motivate me. Throughout my first hot yoga class, I couldn't stop grinning. Ever since then, I have improved emotionally, physically, mentally. I am a stronger person all around because of this yoga and I look forward to helping people discover what they're capable of.
I started my yoga journey in 2012 with a free week at a yoga studio. I was young, I had little to no flexibility and absolutely no body awareness. I struggled and sweat a TON, but after the first class I took, I was hooked. I signed up for a 200 hour power yoga teacher training in 2013, which gave me more knowledge about yoga, but I didn't feel ready to teach. I kept a daily practice after that and looked for more ways to engage my yoga practice. In 2015 I completed a 100 hour power yoga with weights teacher training, which strengthened my body and mind. Finally in 2016 I made the decision to go to yoga's birthplace, India, where I completed my 200 hour Hatha yoga training. Yoga is such an integral part in my life, it inspires confidence and love for myself and gives me mental clarity. To this day I still maintain a daily practice and it's something I want to continue with for the rest of my life. Whatever problems life throws at you - your mat will always be there for you. I've been practicing yoga since 2013, attracted to the practice because I saw the inner strength and benefits you can get from allowing yourself to be grounded on the mat. I wanted to find a way to stay grounded and connected to who I am as a person and yoga is key to that. Based on his newly found love of the practice I enrolled in the teacher certification program at I AM YOGA Wellness and received my yoga teacher certification in March of 2015.
I enjoy teaching various types of classes including Vinyasa as well as Hatha style and like to incorporate Yin yoga into my classes that allows for students to get deeper into poses and to begin releasing deeper muscle tissues. I enjoy bringing a fun energy that encourages students to go farther at the same time honoring their bodies while on the mat.
I want students to have a positive experience and truly enjoy yoga. Yoga, “Is a journey of learning the inner you and letting yourself become one with the world around you."
Two years ago, Fiorella was only trying to fill a physical education credit in college. Today, she is a 200 hour and Restorative yoga certified instructor who incorporates healing elements into each class, whether it is Reiki (energy healing / chakra work), aromatherapy, or gentle adjustments. Fiorella thrives to provide a safe, non judgement space for students to go within, be inspired, and Be Love.
A dedicated yoga instructor with advance practice strongly influenced by Vinyasa and Ashtanga styles. I enjoy inspiring and motivating others for a better lifestyle and the right path to wellness. My classes are challenging but also very focused on what is beneficial physically and mentally. My goal in every single class to make my students feel very supported and well guided. Nothing makes me happier than to see my students accomplish and overcome challenging sequences or postures!
